Come and See Me by PARTYNEXTDOOR (feat. Drake)

[Verse 1: PARTYNEXTDOOR]

Doesn't make sense now

---- just got real, things are gettin' intense now

Commitment isn’t easy. It demands trust and active prioritization of who or what you are committing to. When we’ve been hurt, it can seem especially intimidating and “intense,” leading us to shove opportunities away at the slightest glimpse of setting expectations or making promises.

I hear you talkin' 'bout "we" a lot, oh, you speak French now?

PARTYNEXTDOOR does just that when he plays on the French word “oui,” pronounced “we,” to sarcastically dismiss a deepening relationship. But we can’t entirely blame him. What is asked of us in intimate relationships can be challenging, especially if we feel insecure. Christians struggle with this daily, trying to glorify God in every action and to love not only our neighbors but also our enemies.

Giving me the signs so I gotta take a hint now

But at a certain point, we know when commitment is imminent. It is desired and might already be given by the other party. To the Christian, God’s commitment is explicit and extraordinary. Even when we run away or get lost, He chases after us in love.3 When we hurt Him and come crawling back, He embraces us in shameless, open arms.4 He gives up perfection in order to be with each of us in our imperfection.5

I hit you up like "Do you wanna hang right now?"On the East Side and you know I'm with the gang right now

Often, we do the bare minimum to justify our commitment and interest—church on special occasions or once a week, prayer before meals or once a day, mission trips and charity. We say we love God and reach out to Him when we are in need, but our hearts aren’t really sincere. It can be easy to treat him like a late-night, last-minute booty call, and even if you are exclusive, He’s not really included in the rest of your life.

You say do I own a watch, do I know what time it is right nowIt's after 2AM and that's askin' a lot of you right now

God won’t state his frustration quite so directly, though that might be warranted if He were a person. No, God is exceptional. Despite how we throw Him to the curb and use Him whenever we want, He has endless patience6 and is always present.7 But, God is also saddened or pleased by different things, and a committed, mutually loving relationship brings Him much joy as it would anyone—even more joy than we could ever experience in our flawed human relationships.

[Chorus: PARTYNEXTDOOR]

All she talkin' bout is, "Come and see me for once

Come and see me for once

So, in patient dedication, God asks for our love and attention. Even if His love is often one-sided, it is undying.8 He does not beg pathetically but instead asks lovingly; He loves us that much and chooses to continue loving us. He is good,9 so receiving this affection is a gift, and wholeheartedly returning it makes the relationship beautiful.

You don't ever come to me, you don't ever come to me"

He continuously wants more of your love and commitment. This yearning is not greedy but natural in order to create a more fulfilling relationship for both ends. Even in the simple act of coming to Him in hardship or repentance, having recognized our need for Him and the depth of His love, God finds joy.10

All she talkin' bout is, "Come and see me for once

Come and see me for once

You don't ever come to me, you don't ever come to me"

We all want to be wanted by others. Even when a relationship is tense, we ideally want peace—as long as we don’t have to be the ones who make amends when we feel wronged. But Christians are called to continuously humble ourselves first with the understanding that we are all the same; we all need community, mercy, forgiveness, acceptance, help, and attention.

[Verse 2: PARTYNEXTDOOR]

I been up for two whole days thinkin' what I did to keep you goin'Thumbin' through the voicemails that you left me tellin' me where I went wrongI'll admit I'm sorry when I feel I'm truly sorryThings change, people change, feelings change tooNever thought the circumstances woulda changed youYou said you never traded noYeah you said thatAnd I believed you when they told me don'tYeah thought you meant thatBut either way you're still invited and I can't even lie to you

[Chorus: PARTYNEXTDOOR + Drake]

Swear these days all you say is, "Come and see me for onceCome and see me for onceYou don't ever come to me, you don't ever come to me"All she hit me with is, "Come and see me for onceCome and see me for onceYou don't ever come to me, you don't ever come to me"

[Verse 3: Drake]

Why you gotta start, girl, why you gotta start?I know we make time for the things that we wantI know you got another ----- tryna play the partJust 'cause he got a heart don't mean he got heartCould be standin' in a field, and he still ain't in the fieldIf anything should change then I thought we had a dealLately you keep questionin' what you get out the dealDoin' things to make me feel the way I make you feelHow hard is it to let you know when I'm comin' home? That way you can be preparedMaybe take a couple sick days and not miss payI don't even know what things are looking like inside of your placeOr how it's decoratedThis thing is gettin' one-sided, I can't even lie to you right nowYeah

[Chorus: Drake]

All she talkin' bout is, "Come and see me for onceCome and see me for onceYou don't ever come to me, you don't ever come to me"All she hit me with is, "Come and see me for onceCome and see me for onceYou don't ever come to me, you don't ever come to me"

About Come and See Me

Released in 2016, "Come and See Me" isn’t new, but its relevance is timeless. A collaboration between R&B singer PARTYNEXTDOOR and renowned Hip hop and R&B artist Drake, it exposes common late-night reflections of modern romances, mingling physical intimacy with emotional bonds. But the underlying yearning, fear, and tension in the lyrics tug at pure human emotions about love and commitment, muddled in the mind and melody.Laying melodic rap over a deep, mellow beat, "Come and See Me" fills a room with its effortless vibe that sinks into the body and mind, drawing listeners with the bass behind each word. Its lyrics compel listeners to connect with both the artists and the mystery lovers addressed in the song; you hardly have to be famous and on tour to understand. Perhaps that is why it became PARTYNEXTDOOR’s highest-charting single to date as part of his second studio album, PARTYNEXTDOOR 3 (P3).1 The Alternative R&B single transports listeners to a reflective realm about love and commitment that is, simultaneously and strangely, deeply familiar.
